Visit the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection on the Museum’s third floor, which is acclaimed for its many important Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works of art. Twenty-five years ago, the Dallas Museum of Art received a one-of-a-kind gift of more than 1,400 works authorized by Wendy Reves in honor of her late husband, Emery Reves. In addition to Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern paintings, it included sculptures, works on paper, and decorative arts objects, all of which are displayed in a recreation of the Reves’s Riviera home, Villa La Pausa. This spectacular bequest transformed the DMA’s collection of late 19th century French art and her donation of European decorative arts founded the institution’s collection in that area.

Join us on the third Friday of each month, when the Museum is open until midnight. Each Late Night offers hundreds of experiences for visitors of all ages with performances, concerts, readings, film screenings, tours, family programs, and more!

The Old Town Lewisville Farmers Market, a seasonal open-air forum for Denton County and North Texas-grown products, will be from May 15 through October 30 (no market on September 25). The market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Wayne Ferguson Plaza in Old Town Lewisville. Vendors still are being sought to sell fresh produce and similar items at the weekly market.

A variety of genres are showcased on Thursday night shows that take place on a sloped lawn that overlooks White Rock Lake.

Women whose dreams took flight. The 25 women featured in Dreams of Flight: A Journey through Air and Space demonstrate resilience, strength and character in the face of great odds. This special exhibit at The Women’s Museum just opened and remains on view through Oct. 31.

The Maya viewed water as animate and intelligent, a living and thinking force with the power to influence events. Water was central to the structure of the universe and present at the beginning of time—oceans, rivers, springs, and rain were united, both literally and spiritually. This exhibit offers a new interpretation of Maya culture based on the sea as a defining feature of the spiritual realm and inspiration of their art. Over 90 works, many recently excavated and never seen in the U.S. reflect a broad range of media used by the Maya artist.

Over the past four decades, James Magee has produced a compelling body of work that has rarely been seen in public. Working with an array of found and castoff materials such as bits of iron, glass, concrete, wax, enamel, lead, mesh, shellac, car parts, Magee creates powerful, sensuous reliefs that are at once uncannily familiar and completely alien.

Mineko Grimmer – a Los Angeles based artist – is known for her unique structures that provide visitors with a visual and sonic experience. Her site-specific installation will extend along the center of the Irving Arts Center’s spacious Main Gallery. Five 6′ × 6′ structures will be filled with a shallow pool of water and elements of bronze, tension wire and bamboo lattice work. The structures are anchored below inverted ice pyramids containing pebbles. As the ice melts, the pebbles are released into the elements, creating a variety of distinctive sounds. Free reception with the artist from 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the Main Gallery.

Vernon Fisher: K-Mart Conceptualism is a survey of the artist’s entire career to date, incorporating paintings, sculptures, and installations from the late 1970s to the present, from both public and private collections in the United States and Europe.

Fisher has lived and worked in Fort Worth since 1977, and is one of Texas’s most internationally recognized artists. The exhibition is organized by Michael Auping, the Museum’s chief curator. “The show,” Auping comments, “will be a revealing look at a body of work that represents an especially interesting moment in contemporary art history in the late 1970s and early 1980s—a time when the legacies of Pop art and Conceptual art created a unique hybrid between painting and installation, inspiring narratives derived from juxtapositions of language and vernacular imagery. The subtitle of the exhibition refers to Fisher’s interest in philosophical enigmas coming out of working-class backdrops and situations.” Fisher comments, “I have an attraction to that kind of subject matter, and have written my share of pieces featuring Dairy Queens, grocery stores, Laundromats, third-rate hotels, etc.”

The exhibition will showcase the early collages that combine abstract painting, text, and image; and a selection of many of the artist’s best-known blackboard paintings, in which a faux blackboard surface is used as the ground for realistic, painted vignettes adjacent to fragments of different stories that suggest variously ambiguous meanings. A number of large, room-sized installations will also be included.

Believe all ogre again. Based on the Oscar®-winning movie, Shrek The Musical comes to Dallas Summer Musicals as the 2010 State Fair musical. The hilarious tale of everyone’s favorite ogre runs from Sept. 28 through Oct. 17 at Fair Park Music Hall.

LOST EGYPT: ANCIENT SECRETS, MODERN SCIENCE takes guests on an immersive quest for knowledge that reveals how archaeologists use modern science and technology to uncover and understand the ancient civilization of Egypt. Through hands-on challenges, authentic artifacts and guidance from real archaeologists, visitors will unearth the mysteries of Egypt, its culture and its people.

The interactive exhibit features a real human mummy and animal mummies, as well as scans, forensic facial reconstructions and for the first time ever, a life-size rapid prototype of a mummy in a stage of “unwrapping.” Visitors explore a re-creation of an Egyptian tomb, and authentic art and artifacts from the daily life and funerary culture of ancient Egypt.

On Halloween, from 4pm-7pm, children dressed in costume are invited to haunt the sidewalks of Allen Premium Outlets. Participating merchants will be handing out festive treats and children can get their face painted. Parents receive their own special treat. Face painting and parent treats are located under the Food Court pavilion.
