Dallas Architecture Forum - Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman" Dallas
Thursday, 10/01/2009
Where:  Magnolia Theater, 3699 McKinney Avenue in Uptown Phone:  (214) 764-2406

2009-2010 FORUM LECTURE SERIES
The first event of the season is Documentary Director, Eric Bricker’s screening of award-winning documentary “Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman” explores the monumental career of the late architectural photographer Julius Shulman, who passed away in July. Populating his architectural photos with human models and striking landscapes, Shulman combined the organic with the synthetic, melding nature with revolutionary urban design. The resulting images helped shaped the careers of some of the great architects of the 20th Century, and his iconic images set the standard for architectural photography. Taking aesthetic cues from Shulman’s own sensual and nuanced photography, Director Eric Bricker built this film around a blend of Shulman’s own images and in-depth interviews with leading architects, designers, artists, and other luminaries. By offering unprecedented access to his photos and day to day life, Shulman’s intimate involvement in the filming process was incalculable to the production of the film. Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, this documentary film has won awards at multiple film festivals. Director Eric Bricker will attend and discuss the making of the film, and then will take questions from those in attendance after the screening. Single tickets, available at the door only, are $20 for general admission and $5 for students with I.D. Dallas Architecture Forum members are admitted for free. The reception begins at 6:15 p.m. with screening to follow at 7:00 p.m.

Susan Rothenberg: Moving In Place Fort Worth
Sunday, 10/18/2009 thru Sunday, 01/03/2010
Where:  The Modern Art Museum

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth presents a special exhibition of twenty-five paintings by Susan Rothenberg. The Modern’s Chief Curator, Michael Auping, and the artist have identified a select group of paintings that span the artist’s career—from the early horse paintings of the mid-1970s, to her most recent body of work, which explores a number of central motifs that have occurred throughout the artist’s 35-year career. Auping comments: “Rather than focusing on Rothenberg’s famous early horse paintings as the beginning of a symbolic, figurative evolution, we are looking at the artist’s work from a more holistic, formal standpoint, identifying her unusual way of organizing pictorial space, regardless of the figurative content”. Each painting in the exhibition will highlight key compositional strategies in a formal narrative where perceived movement, fragmentation, and painterly gesture establish a dynamic interaction with the edges and frames of her canvases. The exhibition is organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in conjunction with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe.

Twenty-five years ago, the Dallas Museum of Art received a one-of-a-kind gift of more than 1,400 works authorized by Wendy Reves in honor of her late husband, Emery Reves. In addition to Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern paintings, it included sculptures, works on paper, and decorative arts objects, all of which are displayed in a recreation of the Reves’s Riviera home, Villa La Pausa. This spectacular bequest transformed the DMA’s collection of late 19th century French art and her donation of European decorative arts founded the institution’s collection in that area.

A special audio tour highlights selected masterpieces from the Reves Collection, including works by Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, and Maurice de Vlamnick.
